Glass thickness is one of the first things people ask about when planning a shower enclosure — thicker sounds sturdier, but it’s not actually a free choice you make independently of everything else. Here’s how it really works.
At Bathsy, every enclosure uses toughened (tempered) safety glass, with the exact thickness matched to the glass finish you choose rather than offered as a separate pick-your-own option:
- Clear, Tinted, and Frosted glass — Saint-Gobain toughened safety glass, in our standard thickness range.
- Fluted glass — 10mm toughened glass, slightly thicker to hold its ribbed texture cleanly.
- Sparkle glass — 8mm toughened glass.
Why does thickness matter at all? A few real, practical reasons:
- Structural stability — thicker glass flexes less, especially on wider unsupported panels.
- Hardware dependency — hinges, rollers, and brackets are rated for a specific glass weight, so thickness and hardware are chosen together, not separately.
- Sound & feel — thicker glass tends to feel and sound more solid when a sliding door closes.
Every Bathsy enclosure — regardless of glass thickness — is toughened (tempered) safety glass, which means it’s heat-treated to be significantly stronger than ordinary glass, and in the rare case it does break, it fractures into small, blunt granules instead of sharp shards.
